~Insecure Writer`s Support Group.

~Insecure Writer’s Support Group(TWSG) is a group I joined on Facebook a few months back, but this is the first time I’m taking part in posting a blog post on the first Wednesday of the month šŸ˜€

~I was insecure with what I wrote- what if people disliked it? Or worse, what if I was shunned for it? Then I realized that I was not alone in having these worries. So, I decided to join the group to see what other writers were insecure about, and also how they helped each other out.

There was a group of writers

who met on every month’s first Wednesday

They talked about their worries

as everyone was insecure in some way.

As time passed by, they thought

Maybe they couldĀ help others as well!

And they created a group on the internet

To connect writers from around the world!

Welcome River! And yeah, those worries are part of the writers life. Which makes IWSG such a great community as we can all come together, alleviate those worries and cheer and support each other.

Insecurity is a mental block. It has many causes often rooted in the subconscious mind that are the result of past trauma or faulty upbringing. In the case of being insecure about one’s writing like most insecurities it stems from the habit of comparing oneself others and also from the preoccupation of looking naĆÆve, or stupid to other people and these two factors inhibit them killing their creativity. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson: “All great artists were once amateurs.” This is a very important concept. If art came easy it would loose its value. Let’s also say that If those accomplished artists that people admire would have been insecure of what they did when they started they would have never become great artists. In my case when nowadays I read my first writing efforts or look at first drawing efforts, because I’m also an illustrator, they make me laugh but those efforts were the basis of my drawing and writing skills. I became competent in what I do because of thousands of mistakes without those mistakes my art would have never developed. But I’ve never been insecure in fact totally the reverse. The best writing about insecurity that I can think of is the first chapter of the Little Prince by the French writer Saint Exepury in which the little boy makes a drawing or a boa constrictor that had devoured an elephant. When he shows it to adults as they can’t see the elephant inside the boa they tell him that is the drawing of a hat and that he shouldn’t waste his time doing such silly drawings. The boy totally unimpressed by their remarks concludes that grown ups are too dumb to understand and appreciate his drawing because they have no imagination. This funny anecdote is very important because it shows that children that are naturally creative are not inhibited by what others think of their artistic efforts. They draw, sing, dance and play without bothering what others think of their performance. As they grow up many become inhibited because they are worried of how they will be perceive by others and that, as I said earlier, kills their creativity and inhibit them.

    • ~this is so true šŸ™‚ Especially with the little prince!(I love that book) I don`t really mind if I don`t write as well as others, I`m just scared the topics I write about (Like LGBT stories) may offend others šŸ™‚

Haha… I dint know what LGBT meant so I had to look for it. Well, you shouldn’t be scared at all because apparently such stories are quite popular nowadays. Besides, there are publishers that specialize in the subject. For instance in the UK where I live Virago press does. Anyway funny enough just today in Twitter I saw a phrase that can help which is: Confidence is not “they will like me”. Confidence is: “I’ll be fine if they don’t.” šŸ™‚

  6. We all have similar insecurities and it really helps to have some like-minded individuals around for support. Keep writing.
