~Who would you save?

Daily Prompt – Truth or Dare.

“If both of us were drowning, who would you save? Your mother, or me?”

I raised an eyebrow at Leit. “Seriously?”

It was sitting on my balcony, its big black eyes focused on my silhouette. The yellow street lights reflected on those eyes, making them glisten. I learned of the creatures name a week back. A name it gave itself, when it found out that I was writing about it, and calling it an it. I asked Leit why such a name, and it said it saw a girl in tears, burying her bunny named Leit.

“Yes. I am curious to know. Would you save a friend you have made during the course of time, or a person you know almost nothing of and barely speak to, only knowing that she was one of the two who played a role in your existence?”

Some questions should be tabooed. I shrugged. “You.”

“You are lying.”

“How`d you know if I was?” I asked, annoyed.

“Because you love your mother.” Leit said, looking up at the dark sky. I swayed my legs in the air, as I was sitting next to Leit. I may have insomnia, for Im only able to fall asleep when its past 4 AM. Leit kept good company after the clock strikes 12 and the house falls silent.

I nodded. “Well, I guess if you asked, Id say whatever would make you happy. If mum had asked me, Id have said Id save her. Its as Henry Louis once said : It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place.”

“I have been many places and have seen many things, and not once have I met a human who has not lied.”

“The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you`ve got it made. A quote from Groucho Max.”

“You keep quoting people I have never heard of.”

“But you seem to know quite a lot for a foreigner already.” I replied, sipping at my coffee. Maybe I wasn`t an insomniac. Maybe it was just the coffee. But no matter how much coffee I drink, at 4 AM, I slept.

“It is one of the skills I have learned from this world. The skill of lying.”

“That`s a new one. Calling lying a skill.”

“It is.”

“Mm-hmm.” I saw the Big Dipper in the sky. The moon was hidden behind scarce clouds.

“Are you ever free during the day?” Leit asked, yawning. This was the first time I saw it do that.

“I am after my afternoon nap. I`m always free. Everyone is. I just find activities to do to fill my time with. Everyone does.”

Leit`s ear twitched as it rubbed its button nose. “You should join me one day.”

“On one of your adventures?”

“If an adventure is what you call it, then yes.”

“Maybe I should.”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

And we both watched the sky in silence, until my watch alarm went of, and I bid farewell before leaving this reality, to fall into another, more abstract one.
